For lifters specifically, the evidence that supplementing an already-replete person boosts performance is weak, but ensuring you are not deficient removes a potential drag on strength and recovery.

Vitamin D and Testosterone

Vitamin D is involved in testosterone production, testes carry vitamin D receptors, and observational studies consistently link low vitamin D status to lower testosterone in men. Some intervention studies (notably Pilz et al., 2011) found that vitamin D supplementation increased testosterone in deficient men, though the literature overall is mixed and not all trials replicate it.

The honest framing mirrors zinc and boron: vitamin D is a permissive factor for normal testosterone production. Correcting a deficiency may help restore healthy testosterone in a deficient man; supplementing a man who already has adequate vitamin D is unlikely to push testosterone higher. So for a man concerned about hormones, getting out of deficiency is worthwhile, but vitamin D is not a "testosterone booster" in the supplement-marketing sense. The Smart Move: Test, Don't Guess

Vitamin D is the one supplement where I genuinely recommend a blood test (25-hydroxyvitamin D). Individual response to a given dose varies a lot based on skin, body fat, genetics, and sun exposure. Test your level, dose to get into the ~30-50 ng/mL range, and re-test after a few months. That removes the guesswork in both directions, you confirm you are getting enough without overshooting. Many people taking 5,000 IU land perfectly in range; some need less, a few need more.

The Partners: K2 and Magnesium

Vitamin D does not work in isolation, and two partner nutrients matter enough that I take all three together.

Vitamin K2. Vitamin D increases how much calcium you absorb from food. Vitamin K2 then directs that calcium into bone and away from arteries by activating osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein. Taking high-dose D3 without adequate K2 means you are boosting calcium absorption without ensuring it is properly routed. A dose of 5,000 IU sits in a zone that is widely used and considered safe for most adults, but it is exactly the range where periodic testing makes sense, both to confirm efficacy and to ensure you are not drifting too high, especially if you also get sun and dietary vitamin D.

Don't Stack D Unknowingly

Vitamin D hides in multivitamins, calcium supplements, fish oil blends, and "immune" formulas. If you take a dedicated 5,000 IU D3 plus a multivitamin with 2,000 IU plus a fortified product, you can quietly climb higher than you intend. Add up your total D from all sources, and when in doubt, test. This is the one fat-soluble vitamin where "more must be better" can actually backfire.
